Webhost report card

Updated
There are some entries here that I haven’t followed up on. I’ll have a look later.

We’ve been toying with the idea of creating a webhost report card.

I thought I’d start right now. And I want to include those hosts that have booted spammers after we’ve complained. Maybe we’ll move this later on, but for now I’ll keep it in this post.

I’ll put up links to the good hosts, and rel=nofollow to the bad ones.

What we need to remember, is that the world is getting sick of spam. Remember the case with send-spam and MCI? MCI buckled under pressure from Spamhaus and LINX, and told downstream to cut the spam software vendor off. We need to remember that these webhosts are not totally invulnerable. If they insist on keeping spammers, we’ll try and escalate too. Possible means include talking to upstream providers, pleading with Google to ban whole servers and other sanctions we haven’t come up with yet. Webspam still doesn’t produce as much of an outcry as e-mail spam, but the spamminess of the search engines does produce a fair amount of clamor. And that’s DIRECTLY related to webspam in its many forms.

So, here’s the start of a list, to be added to as we complain and see what the hosts are doing. Feel free to reference this post if you complain. I’ll put only those I’ve researched myself on this list. If you want to make your own webhost report card, do your own due diligence and abuse letters, then send me a link for the report card. I’ll include the links here, at the bottom.

Good hosts:

  • Carpathia Hosting. Booted several sites after I complained - March 2005
  • myserver.org had a free subdomain site. After I complained, I got one word in response (I sent in to the support address): Terminated. Hehe, they rooted the site to localhost!!! April 5.

Bad hosts:

  • Verio hosting or downstream. Server: 161.58.59.8. We’ve complained many times. Some domains that we complained about were moved by the spammer. We don’t know if Verio asked the spammer to move them. But the server itself is still full of spammy domains. Several thousand of them. February 2005. Still hosting many spammy domains April 5

Customers warned, hopefully stopped spamming:

Webhosts complained to:

  • Timesoft, which is downstream provider using the EV1 datacenter, without rebranding the DNS on the servers. Complaint sent for a German referrer spammer March 9th, awaiting response.
  • Cyberwurx/Conepuppy hosts Todor. Complaint sent March 9, awaiting response.

ISP’s warned about harboring spammers:
