Incorrect whois data reporting

This is a place where you can report incorrect whois data:

http://wdprs.internic.net/

Remember that Moniker just requires the owner of the domain to change a comma, and they’ll accept the new version. But other registrars are a lot stricter.

Just a note about a basic problem with the whole reporting system:

It appears that the Internic form - and the Internic reporting system generally - works only with certain top-level domain names whose registrars are directly accredited by ICANN.

For months I have known about a large Israeli corporation whose Whois information is patently and obviously incorrect. There are other signs that this may be intentional, but perhaps not. When I tried to use the Internic form, I was informed that

“Sorry, but the Whois Data Problem Report tool cannot currently be used to submit reports for domain names in the TLD (il) you entered. Please contact the relevant registrar or registry directly for assistance.”

I tried to contact the registry for the .il TLD, isoc.org.il , and after a few days of emails back and forth was informed that “keeping the contact details at the WHOIS data accurate is the responsibility of the registrant,” and that they intended taking no action. It was clear that they did not even intend to contact the registrar of the incorrect information or the registration holder (registrant).

As far as I can tell, there is no Israeli, international or other body to whom this can be reported, and there is nothing to keep a registrant from supplying false information to evade legal action, or for any other purpose, whether or not it is in the public interest.

Presumably, this is true of other non-ICANN TLDs and their subdomains as well. Since spammers and fraudsters often prefer to locate outside of the United States and Western Europe, where there is more of a tradition of rule of law, this could be a big public problem.

I would suggest that anyone who feels that he/she has any influence to help solve this problem should attempt to do so.

    Thanks.
    David.
