Had a badly spammed, otherwise non-used guestbook which I set up expressly as a guestbook-spammer honeypot. Here's what I learned:

- Spammers use proxies, so blocking IP's is useless
- NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW html-Meta is useless
- Spam bots are used a lot
- Double-opt-in email verification works!
- Graphic digit verification works!

I've plunked my ongoing anti-spam experiences including code snippets into http://www.romanvirdi.com/guestbook

Sawa:
I guess that makes you slime, then? I deleted your spammy link...

In fact, he's not a one time spammer. Stay tuned for a brand new post about him...

All spammers are slime, but when you are supposed to be someone with morals, such as a Christian minister, it sure shows he doesn’t.

Most spammers we deal with are more random than what you describe. Some likely are doing this, but most of them are not.

Believe me, Roy Giles is a master scammer. He has been doing this for a lot of years. His own church and pastor will not support his ministry and they do not acknowledge him as a member of their church.

The issue isn't Christianity, Jesus Christ but spamming.

Spammers spam. If you're sending/posting/linking via false pretense -- forcing content on someone who has not expressed prior interest in what you have to print/link/copy, and/or even gone so far as to refuse to stop your activity after someone tries to ask you to (if/when they can locate who to contact), that's SPAM.

About spammers and their crud, spam, I DO notice that spammers now target certain themed sites (no surprise there)...as in, the porno spammers search out and target conservative sites, etc. I had a remaining few threads on a site that remained open for trackbacks/comments (now no longer), and, among those left available to whomever, the ONLY ONE that was repeatedly spammed by porno spammers and gambling spammers and all that crap was one that had "RNC" in the title and thread content.

My little test case...proven: spammers aren't random so much as some people try to suggest they are in who/how they spam with what, but are relentless in targeting others.

About this one spammer, this thread, anyone can call themselves anything and spammers always do (call themselves whatever/anything that suits their compulsions). That a spammer is targeting Christian sites under the ruse of being "a minister" is moreorless the same as someone fancying themselves "a pharmacy/pharmacist" spamming about drugs, etc.

It's not a bad taste Christian, it's just another ripoff action by another bane Spammer. But they're still damned, just to add a bit of theology here.

I still consider it borderline spam if someone posts short on topic posts all the time to many different sites. If the posts are not really informational or useful but are on topic, that is just a spammer doing a better job that most people won't notice or consider spam. The problem is when you get into this area it is very grey, what you consider spam might not be by many other people. So while I hate to see this kind unless it is really bad, I just ignore it.
