I may not visit this site again, but I thought I would say, the worst people for spam and reporting it, are a company called Layeredtech.

I moderate a phpbb message board, won't say which, and one of them spammed it with something like this 10.xx.xxx.72.reversed.layeredtech.com

Which at first glance appeared to be this, 72.xxx.xx.10. I can't remember all the I.P. numbers.

I copied the info, and mailed it to them, and included a weblink directly linking to the spam.

I got mailed back asking for e-mail headers, like DUH, on a message board.

Then I told them again, what had happened, the guy replied, I need server logs, so I reply I'm a moderator not an Admin, then he replies there's nothing I can do.

Like hello, spam links, shifty .reversed. I.P. address, like having reverse I.P's is normal for most people :-s.

The Admin, does little there these days, consequently, the person came back, and I reported it a couple more times, exactly the same way and both times, I was asked for e-mail headers.

Do these people understand the concept of messageboards or what??

In the end I stopped trying to report their spam to them, as I suspect they knew full well what was going on, and didn't give a flying toss basically.

Just using some pathetic attempt at due process, to look like they faintly gave a damn.

Another company I e-mailed about some spam, I think it was someone called "the planet", told me whatever happened they wouldn't be able to tell me.

Huh??

Like banning spammers is a state secret, okay I'll wait 6 months, until the spammer is sentenced to 10 years hard labour, and read about it in the papers, like it matters if I know or not. It's not like I'd ever get called as a witness for the prosecution.

Excuse me sir, do you recognise the person in the dock, with thick glasses, B.O. and eczema. Not yet I don't, tell you what, get him to write something on a laptop, about home loans or something, and I'll assess its quality, to see if it looks like stuff I saw.

Funny how half these companies when you join, can provide you with phone, internet and free e-mail, but don't tell you you get something similar, to those 150 free phone text message per month offers, except the texts translate to spam when you're surfing their networks.

One day someone will probably walk straight into Comcast headquarters, and mutilate a file server with an Axe.

Irony is they'll get about 5 years prison, the server will be replaced using the fine they had to pay, and spamming will resume in 72 hours max, because too many Russians are mailing their backup server, saying they can't make money, and their kids are hungry. The only time an engineer will move faster than a turtle :-(.

It's all a big joke.

It must be spite. Regardless of having any effect on their google ranking, the crapflood must be cleaned up by *someone*.

After the initial joy when the whole nofollow thing came out I realized that too. Spammers are too stupid and lazy to care to check. But what makes this especially dumb is they seem to be specifically targeting MediaWiki which by default uses nofollow.

That hasn't stopped spammers from bombarding lots of other similar software that includes rel=nofollow in links. If they're using an army of zombie bots, what do they care? It's not their CPU time they're using.

Since not all wikis have editable sections I guess that is why it had not caught on yet. But targeting MediaWiki for spam is just stupid, it has the nofollow attribute built in.
