Blogspammer tracked backwards

We usually track spammers by beginning with with samples of their spam, then tracking them from that.

This guy tracked a spammer in person, because he was freeloading on his wifi:

Blog Spammer Caught. Now What? (hosted on Spam-blocker Resource, couldn’t find a permanent link)

I’ve got a few suggestions for what to do next: First off, what you do depends on what country this is. There might be criminal implications, if the logs of his activity were saved, and he’s in a country where this kind of thing could be interpreted as illegal. You see, blogspamming may not be illegal by itself, but when combined with other factors, it might be. You’ve got clear evidence of him using someone else’s internet connection while spamming. Talk to say someone who has contacts with law enforcement who will understand what you’re talking about, then see if they’re interested.

I posted this to Metafilter, and the consensus in the feedback is that this is fake, possibly an attempt at viral marketing: http://www.metafilter.com/mefi/52505

Maybe it IS fake. But I guess the main point is that it could happen, and probably will happen some day.

There are many software tools openly sold in the market under the guise of PR impovement tools, and many of them are blog spmming tools. I came across one such tool called Blog Link Genetator. Now if a naive person buys such tools without knowing that it is a blog spamming tool, he will get punished for his ignorance which may not be fair. Such tools are even sold on clickbank. May be you should do something to ban sale of such tools.
