Nonsense forum posts without links

I was just stumped when moderating a forum I own. I got the same post that was posted here, except the post on my forum didn’t have the text pasted in several times:

Nonsense post

And I’ve been getting several of them lately. I’ve found the best way to deal with them is to search for specific sentences in the posts. If they can be found on several forums, the posts are fake - they’re not entered by users, but by bots.

Question is, what’s the point? A test run to see what forums the posts stick to?

Makes sense to spam without it looking like spam, fly under the radar, then launch the real spam after you’re sure it sticks.

Seen a few of those already - most didn’t even bother attempting as much information, but the key phrase is asking how to post or PM.

It’s a bot. Google both of the usernames. Check the profile carefully for a URL in the signature or home page field; if it’s not there now, it WILL come in the near future. The joys of profile spam …

Rule #465: if someone goes out of their way to say they’re from the US in their first contact with you, they’re not.

    Hi,
I encountered the same crap, I think they are trying to untrain spam filters, or tire us into accepting their junk spam.

I just found your site looking for phpbb spam solutions (just started a board and wanted to be pro-active about it)

Thanks for creating a blog on this topic, very helpful.

I notice a lot of comment spam was eliminated in MT when I notched up the built-in spam tools. Any post with a URL is tagged. That gets 95% of them, though I wish I could alow users to enter URLs in comment. Its a price to pay, but it helped a lot.
