Trackbacks are for showing other bloggers that you have blogged about them, or about a similar topic to theirs. It’s a wonderful tool for building interconnecting links between blogs, thus driving the web forward, and creating a good way for readers to find other relevant content.
Trouble is, spammers are on the lookout for any type of interactivity they can misuse to insert links to their sites, thus creating more link popularity for their sites. So, we need solutions for guarding our trackbacks against spammers.
I’ll attempt to make a fairly complete resource here for various solutions to preventing trackback spam here.
- .htaccess blocks
- Preventing direct POST’s to the WP trackback script
- Removing trackback functionality
- Spam fighting plugins
- Moderation
I’ll add more links. Just pressed for time right this moment.
