These spammers have been caught referrer spamming. That means they've accessed files on the website, with the intent of getting their referrers in the site's access log, in the hopes of having referrer scripts or statistics showing their link. They hope a percentage of the sites they hit will have public referrers in some form, but seldom check that they do. Some troll Google for specific scripts, though, and spam those they find.
