Search Engine Optimization

The general aim of "SEO" is to improve the ranking of pages from a site within search engines. Ideally so they return in the top 3 for given keywords. Google's page rank is often seen as the measure of this.

BlackHat vs. WhiteHat

All too often, SEO means dirty tricks to fool the search engines and/or spamming of wikis and comment boxes (and forums and anything else they can find) to boost page rank.

Even the less evil "link swap" is just about gaming the system.

The argument is that everyone is doing it and it's the rat on top that wins.

This is not so true.

Search engine creators spend their time attempting to figure out what matters and what's good and great. Therefore they battle the tricks, swaps etc to filter out those that have "over gamed" the system.

The reason for all this gaming is that visitors equal money and visitors come from search engines.

The best visitors actually come from sites that have recommended you.

To get recommended you can

A. Game the system and do swaps
B. Be a great site that everyone loves
C. Make every one hate you and link while ranting (bad idea)

The truth is still that content is king and that the best content brings the best rewards.

It also brings the spammer trying to hitch a free ride.

The white hat SEO will tweak your site so that a search engine can read it properly. He or she will make sure your images have alt and title attributes and the title attribute is added where ever it makes sense.

They will make sure that there is a good spread of good key words used in real phrases in said title and alt text. They will not use key word stuffing and will recommend good topics to write about and good words to use in said topics.

After that, it is down to how good your content is.

Spoofing the engines and spamming the other sites might get page rank and a temporary lift in the visitor rate and you might even earn some cash but after your vile deeds come out you will find you've been locked in the cold — no search engine love and no link love.

Nothing.

Just a cold dead stats page and content no one will read.

Meanwhile your below-average rival will be basking in the glory of being niche leader.

You should have been there but you hired a spammer to do the job and now you are poor.
